Head of the Technology @ Tilde – AI powered Language Technologies

While the global AI conversation often centers on English-first models, Giedrius Karauskas is charting a different course, ensuring that Nordic European languages don't get left behind in the digital revolution. As the Head of the Technology Department at Tilde, a leading innovator in AI-powered language technologies, Giedrius brings over 14 years of experience to the forefront of the industry. His work focuses on a critical intersection: creating sophisticated AI tools that are not only linguistically inclusive but also enterprise-secure.

Championing Digital Sovereignty and Specialized LLMs Giedrius and his team are currently tackling one of the most significant challenges in the field: the dominance of English-centric Large Language Models (LLMs). Under his technical leadership, Tilde has developed TildeOpen, an open-source foundational LLM with 30 billion parameters, trained on Europe's LUMI supercomputer specifically for Baltic and Eastern European languages. This initiative addresses the "linguistic subjectivity" of mainstream models, offering higher precision for languages like Lithuanian and Latvian while ensuring data remains within the EU to meet strict security and privacy standards.
